It started at 3 a.m., with a phone screen.

We are Chase and Stefanie, parents of Ryer and Palmer, from Sylvania, Ohio. One night Stefanie was up with the baby and turned her phone around to show me what she had been reading about the wipes we were using. We finished the change. Then we sat there in the dark, quietly aware that we did not actually know what we had been putting on our baby twelve times a day.

The crocodile roll. Ryer was two when Palmer came home. Both of them squirmed like crocodiles on the changing table, and we got poo on our hands more times than we can count. One wipe was never enough, the second tore, and by the third our own hands were in it. For a long time we blamed ourselves.

Palmer’s skin. Our daughter came out of every change red and irritated. That was with the wipes we were buying.

The family photo. We had a blowout right before family pictures, everyone in dress shirts and dresses. There is a very specific kind of quiet that settles over a family in that moment.

30,000 feet. Before Palmer, when it was just Ryer, we flew to Florida and he had a blowout on the plane. You can only imagine our terror. What got us through it was a thick wipe that opened with one hand, and the cleanup was quick and easy.

So we made the wipe we wished we had. Thick enough for the caked-on, baked-on ones. Big enough, at 8x7 inches, that one usually does the whole job. A pop top that opens with one hand, because the other hand is holding a crocodile. And a rule we made at the kitchen table: if we could not explain an ingredient to a friend, it did not go in. We ended up with seven, almost all of it water, one of them coconut oil, and we print every one on the pack. Palmer’s skin stopped coming out red after we switched.
